David
David was at home and, without thinking, went to pick up a heavy box – in the process, he tore the rotator cuff of his left shoulder. He’d planned to retire later in the year and drive a trailer across the country. But that was no longer an option. He underwent emergency surgery and returned home to recuperate. He refused the doctors’ advice to receive in-home care, instead deciding he could get better on his own. However, the recovery was much more challenging than he anticipated. Simple tasks became nearly impossible for him. He could barely move the left half of his body. He felt helpless and weak, which led to severe depression. He wasn’t sure what to do.
Sara was arriving home after a long day at the office. While attempting to carry grocery bags from the car, she slipped and fell on her right side. She ended up spraining her wrist, and work became impossible without the use of her dominant hand. Sara lost the ability to do simple tasks like holding items, washing up, or laundry. Even taking care of her children was difficult and overwhelming. She felt like she was letting everyone down and longed to return to her life before the injury. But she didn’t know how.

Ryan
Ryan, a recently retired doctor, got the life-changing news that he’d been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. At first, he was determined to beat his condition and wanted to do everything for himself. However, over the next few months, things became increasingly challenging. At one point, he slipped and fell, fracturing his arm in two places. After that, he became much more reliant on his wife and the live-in aide they hired. He still had so much life to live but was desperate to reclaim his independence.
Marie was a successful executive of a large corporation, managing hundreds of employees. One day at work, she suddenly collapsed without warning. She was diagnosed with a transient ischemic attack (TIA), a “mini-stroke.” After rounds of testing in the hospital, she was allowed to return home. She wanted to return to work as soon as possible, but it quickly became apparent that her ability to focus and complete tasks were impaired. She tried to ignore the problem and push through, but it proved impossible. She wanted so badly to reclaim her position of power, but it felt hopeless.
